Review

About ten years ago, a cop named Max Payne teamed up with femme fatale Mona Sax to take down some rather bad men. Since then, he has been surprisingly silent.

Now that he’s finally back, does is matter? Is Max still relevant, or is Max Payne 3 another Duke Nukem Forever, and should had stayed hidden in the depths of development? Stay tuned to find out.

In Max Payne 3, Max has been hired to protect a family in Brazil after he quit the police force. But, as with any crime story, nothing is as it seams, and Max is soon trying to rescue his employer’s trophy wife, all while trying to put the pieces together of what happened and preventing it from escalating. Given that he has been mixing Scotch and painkillers, that proves to be problematic. It’s a fascinating tale of deceit, crime, and abuse of power. All the happy things we love to discuss. It’s a wild ride, and we are taken along with Max for the thrill. The game does not require knowledge of previous games. It does help, but as long as you know that Max is a self-abusive ex-cop whose wife and child were killed in the line of duty several years before the game begins, you will be fine. The story is pretty self contained. Pretty much all that you need to know you are told, or can infer by paying attention. However, players familiar with Max’s history will pick up on some things.
The story is rather good. Not as good as its predecessor, but still a very good crime drama. The characters are interesting, motives are always in question, and Max himself is a wonderful storyteller, narrating the whole experience. The game blends gameplay and narrative cutscenes very well, and cuts back and forth between them seamlessly. Because of this, the player needs to be prepared. You never know when you will be required to fire a shot or dodge a bullet. This gives the game a really cinematic feel, not unlike Uncharted. Max’s narrative continues between both gameplay and cutscenes and really flows well, and helps to prevent the segmentation that shows up on other games. “Ok, I’m playing; now I’m watching and putting the controller down.” That doesn’t really happen in Max Payne 3. There are may cutscenes, but they are often short and interspersed with gameplay sections, not giving the player a chance to rest his laurels. Also, unlike other games, the guns that show up in the cutscenes are the guns Max has with him during play. A small thing, but does wonders for immersion.

The gunplay is very, very tight. Max can hold 2 one hand guns, (wielded single or dual) and one two handed gun. The variety of guns is impressive, ranging from uzi’s and pistols, to rifles, shotguns and even a rocket launcher. Aiming feels tight, ammunition is plentiful, and there are always enemies to shoot. It is a good thing the controls feel accurate, because you are going to need to aim well. Most enemies can take quite a beating, even with aim assist, so headshots are a must. Our hero is a bit fragile, and can be killed easily, even on lower difficulty modes, so you have to be able to quickly take out adversaries, and it’s not uncommon to have six or more guys firing at you at once. To help stave off the reaper, a cover system has been implemented. Not anything new, but it does work well.
What would a Max Payne game be without his trademark Bullet Time and Shootdodging? Bullet Time stamina is acquired during combat by killing enemies, taking hits, and avoiding bullets. When enabled, everything slows down, bullets leave trails, and Max is able to dispatch several enemies is short order. It is very cool, and often the only way to survive some encounters. Shootdodging is the classic slow motion dive, all the while shooting with (usually) two guns. More of an evasive maneuver, as it leave you vulnerable for a few seconds when you land, it can really help, particularly when leaving cover.

Shootdodging in action
This brings us to one of my main complaints with the game: it is really easy to die. Even with a good shooting and cover system, it is still very easy to die horrible, even on the lower difficulties. It was not uncommon for me to clear a room, take a corner wrong and get shot to death in seconds (from full health) from an idiot with a rifle. Checkpoints are fairly frequent, but it can still be rather frustrating. There aren’t any armor upgrades or anything to reduce damage, so you’re stuck with cover and learning the levels. Still, all it takes is one lucky enemy to send you back to the dreaded red and black DEAD screen.
The game looks great. The characters models and cinematics looks really well done, a far cry from the technology ten years ago. The guns looks good, and firefights seem like something out of a John Woo movie. New (bald) Max does take a while getting used to, and honestly never looks as good as the old model, but luckily the game features both. About midway through the game, Max makes some changes in his life and shaves his head as part of that change. It never really stops looking weird, but isn’t distracting. That said, Old Max looks great in this game. The trenchcoat still works wonders.
